PROJECT NAME: Single Family Residence

LOCATION: Huntington Harbour, California

The client commissioned Otis Architecture to design a two-story 4400 square foot contemporary residence that was both inviting and comfortable. The result is a home with whimsical, seductive curves set in contrast to an ordered formality. The curves seem to tempt the orderliness, neither one fighting for dominance, rather both mutually engaging.  The home’s four corners seem to dissolve, with corner glass and a metal roof.  As these corners dissipate, they blur the building line, and begin to disassemble the box.

A palette of natural finish materials, including Safari Quartzite, limestone, maple and cherry woods, and steel is used. The plan is organized with entertaining and family spaces on the first floor, and a hall-free second floor with bedrooms surrounding an open, light-filled landing. The home’s roof terrace captures a view of the shoreline.

The result is a home that reflects a sense of openness within a realm of privacy, forging a direct relationship between the outdoor spaces and the interior.

With this home came the unique opportunity to create a truly cohesive project.  The strong collaboration with the client proved particularly enjoyable as they share a strong design aesthetic.
